My daughter was just married in December 2009 so we recently went through all of this stuff!

My advice - just let your guests know ahead of time what to expect - that way there are no surprises for anyone and they will be prepared. Perhaps the reception card could say Open Bar during cocktail hour, Cash Bar after dinner.

I have also been to many receptions where the bar was closed during the dinner hour. Or perhaps think about providing beer and wine for your guests and having mixed drinks be available on a cash basis. Again that could be printed on your reception card.

Congratulations and good luck!

What you're doing is fine, but if possible, rather than talk about it as a tab limit (especially with a formal event!), work with the venue on cost estimates and just set it up as a cocktail hour, or it shuts down after dinner has been served. And once you're at that point, you shouldn't pay for drinks, but I wouldn't even have them available. If someone can't survive on wine alone, they have issues.

Yes you can and you either let them know that cut off time is the final time to get a drink or that after the cut off time it is a cash bar.

We provided soft drinks, beer and wine at our wedding and had a bar limit. We worked with the reception hall manager to let us know when we were approaching the limit. Based on the time and the incremental cost of a couple of bottles of wine and another keg, we told them to keep serving.

Up here, it is increasingly common for the bride and groom to just pay for beer, wine and soft drinks. Anything else is paid for by the guest. Because that is common here, we didn't have any complaints and the people who wanted the hard stuff paid for it themselves.

It's YOUR wedding, and YOUR special day. This is a day you only get (hopefully) once in your life time. Make sure it fits you personally, not your guests, because in the end if it's not what you wanted, if you've spent to much, then you are the one that will be disappointed.

Don't plan the wedding for the guests, plan it based on your preferences and enjoy yourself while you are there. Many brides let their guests ruin their special day.

Good luck, and congrats!

you should have it that you have it to a certain time and if the guests still wanna drink then they have to pay for it themselves.

it gets really expensive having an open bar the whole reception. - i know i did it and thank god my parents paid for that part cause we wouldnt have been able to afford it...

but i also think that just having wine after is a good idea too.

You can do that. I'm sure some guests will be bothered, but then, people sometimes just like to complain.

You wouldn't pay for drinks after the cut off, that's the point of a cap on the bar tab.

I'd warn against it. It can be confusing for guests.

Can you just close down the bar during dinner (for an hour) and for 30 minutes before the end of the reception? That might save you a lot.

Is a tab bar your only option? You venue won't offer you a flat rate per person? I agree with some others that maybe only doing beer and wine, and maybe a signature cocktail, for the entire night is a good compromise. It can save a lot of $.

And I HATE the "it's your day!" excuse. Once you involve other people, it becomes about them, too. The reception is to thank your guests for witnessing your marriage ceremony.

(And it should go without saying - don't switch to a cash bar. It's really rude to make your guests pay for anything at an event you are hosting.)

I think having a cap is a good idea. There are those people who can't have a good time unless they are horribly wasted, and you don't want them ruining your wedding. However, I would also suggest, having the bar become a cash bar after a certain amount. If people want to continue to drink, it's on their dime.

I think it would seem cheap I do not drink but i would feel that you were skimping and being cheap if the bar closed.
