Hi. I am sorry, but everyone on here is WRONG. What you CAN be liable for is if someone falls and breaks their leg, arm, etc. Although you would not be sued over such, per se, your homeowners insurance would cover this (as with anyone that is hurt on your property at any time of the year.)

You cannot be sued over serving alcohol....UNLESS it is to MINORS. Read this short article. It explains everything. The person consuming the alcohol is responsible....not the person serving. If someone was to leave and get into an accident, the state views this as "the consumption of the liquor, rather than the furnishing of it, caused the injuries/accident." IF you encourage someone to keep drinking when they are obviously intoxicated, ONLY THEN would you be held accountable. Or, as I said, IF you knowingly served alcohol to minors, this would be on your hands.

Now, remember....this is a wedding!! I live in "big drinking country," and have never witnessed anyone that visibly intoxicated at a wedding. Also, remember, that IF this was the law....no one would ever serve beer or alcohol at any kind of party! Birthdays, Fourth of July BBQ's, Anniversaries, New Years Eve. I mean c'mon....just because it's a wedding, doesn't mean the laws change.

The other issues to think about besides alcohol is....(1) adequate parking and (2) an adequte number of bathrooms. It's one thing to have a lot of property, but you must also be able to handle the car situation and the bathroom situation. Also...if there is music...check about any kind of noise ordinance. Also, check wtih the neighbors!!

Here is the article about serving alcohol:

You should definitely consider hiring a professional bartender (Kevinsbartendingservices.com is great if you're in CA, or email them and see if they can help you, they're all over I think), or just don't serve alcohol. Have a few bottles of champagne and whatnot, but no hard alcohol. That would definitely help.

check with your homeowner's insurance and ask them. also there is event insurance which will pay your vendors in case the event doesn't take place (weather, unforeseen illness, whatever) but the premium for that is sky high.

yeah, theres all sorts of stuff you need to think about. assuming its not just going to be a standard sized backyard barbeque or something, your probably going to need a liquer lisence. there is usually a limit to how many people you can have in an area without one, and a number that if you reach it, you will need one. if your bringing in outside help to serve the alcohol your CERTAINLY going to need one. you would also be liable if any of the outside help (waiters and such) tripped over anything, like a flowerpot or somethign

Depends on the state. In my state if you have a party and someone leaves your house drunk and kills someone then the person throwing the party is responsible and will be arrested for the death. be careful and make sure you know the law clearly.

You'll be responsible for anyone who gets hurt on your property and yes I guess you could be held responsible just like a bar would be for serving someone to much!

Yes, you would. That is why places get "liquor liability" insurance. If someone gets drunk & drives home, you will be responsible for overserving them.

Same with if someone get's hurt, but, most normal home-owners insurances will cover that.

If its on your property yes you would be liable for someone under the age of 21 if they where drinking. For all weddings, its best to have a professional Bar Tender so that they can check any ones id's that they need to.

I believe you could be held responsible for that. Remember people sue over anything these days. Suggest your sister pay for rides for intoxicated guests, or you could rent a shuttle bus for this purpose.
