The situation, they said, created a need for supervision and transportation for the girls. Two family friends in Pickerington offered that support system, so the family rented a Pickerington apartment in September and enrolled the girls at Pickerington North.</p> <p>Pickerington North has one of the top girls basketball programs in central Ohio, reaching the state semifinals last season and the regional finals in 2010. Olentangy Orange, in its fourth season, is a fast-rising rival, going 21-3 last season and losing to North in a district final.</p> <p>Lippe cited an Oct. 19 email from Olentangy Orange athletic director Tony Milano to OHSAA assistant commissioner Roxanne Price that doubted the motives for the transfer.</p> <p>Milano’s email said the Bassett-Smiths approached Orange officials about firing Grimes for unfair or illegal summer practice policies. Within a week or two after the school refused, the girls withdrew from the district and James Bassett-Smith said the family was moving for financial reasons.</p> <p>Price, who oversees transfer and eligibility cases for the OHSAA, said the association’s decision was based only partly on information provided by Orange.</p> <p>“There is a red flag raised whenever a senior transfers, and there is a red flag raised when parents own a home (in this case, two homes), and they simply move into an apartment in another district,” Price said.</p> <p>Ashley and Morgan, a 6-1 center, have practiced with Pickerington North this season and sat on the bench in street clothes during games. Morgan will regain her eligibility next season.</p> <p>“All we want to do is play basketball, and we don’t feel like we’ve done anything wrong,” Ashley said. “We’ll still continue to practice and work out with the team in order to improve our own games and help our team go as far as it can. If I’ve got to play on the scout team, I’m willing to do that.”</p> <p>Attorney Chase Mallory said the Bassett-Smiths were denied mainly because Olentangy Orange did not want to lose two talented players to a rival state power.</p> <p>“If they hadn’t gone to Pickerington North, I really wonder if the folks at Olentangy Orange had protested this, and I doubt if the OHSAA would have rubber-stamped their decision,” Mallory said.</p> <p>“Naturally, we’re disappointed with the court’s decision. We thought we had a strong case. Looking at the big picture, I think the case might have turned on the information that there was a dispute with the coach requiring offseason workouts, the family took issue with it and picked up and moved to a different district.
